Description

Back in 1978, Eddie Van Halen handed Seymour Duncan a P.A.F. and asked for a custom rewind: hotter output, better harmonic response, more “juice” for the kind of tapping and whammy tricks he was pioneering at the time. The ’78 Model is that experiment, preserved and put into production.

It runs on an Alnico 2 magnet and carries the exact hot-wind specs from that original rework, giving it a distinct voice among vintage-flavored humbuckers. Rhythm tones come out warm and slightly gritty rather than tight and aggressive, while leads push through with bite and clarity. Tapped runs and pinch harmonics ring out with the kind of overtone content that made this pickup part of guitar history in the first place — even though Eddie eventually moved on to other tones, this was a genuine stepping stone in his search for the ultimate sound.

Good fit for players who want:

  • Hard-rock rhythm tones with warmth instead of sterile tightness
  • Articulate picked and tapped harmonics that cut through a mix
  • A humbucker that responds well to whammy bar dive bombs and returns
  • Vintage-inspired output with a bit more push than a stock P.A.F.

Finished with a gold cover, this ’78 Model TB drops into any guitar routed for standard humbucker pickups, bringing a documented piece of tone history to your own rig.
