The Silver Sky isn’t a copy of a vintage guitar—it’s a distillation of what made those early-60s single-coils great, filtered through John Mayer’s playing style and Paul Reed Smith’s obsession with detail. Every part of this guitar was reconsidered and refined during a collaboration that took more than two and a half years to get right.
Start with the headstock: it borrows PRS’s signature shape but flips it, both to suit Mayer’s technique and to keep string length behind the nut consistent for better tuning stability. PRS locking tuners hide behind a traditional closed-back vintage housing, so the look stays classic while the function stays modern. The maple neck, carved after 1963/1964 references, pairs with a 22-fret rosewood fretboard at a vintage-correct 7.25″ radius—it’s the kind of neck that feels immediately familiar in your hand.
The steel tremolo bridge sits flush against the alder body in its resting position, so it only dips in pitch and never lifts off—this keeps the guitar acoustically resonant and boosts signal-to-noise on the single coils. Speaking of which, the custom 635JM pickups (wired to a 5-way blade switch) deliver a round, full voice with top end that stays musical instead of turning brittle or harsh.
Smaller details matter here too: a bone nut, a curved molded metal jack plate that makes cable changes painless, reworked knobs, fretwire slimmer than PRS’s usual gauge, and a double-action truss rod you can adjust from the front of the headstock.
