Description
Born from a friendship between two rock legends, the Gretsch G6199 Billy-Bo Jupiter Thunderbird revives a guitar that almost never left the vault. Bo Diddley sketched the original Jupiter Thunderbird shape back in 1959, and decades later he handed a rare example to Billy F Gibbons as a gift. Rather than risk that one-of-a-kind instrument on tour, Gibbons worked with Gretsch to bring it back as a road-ready reproduction, injected with his own BFG mojo along the way.
The mahogany body carries a laminated maple top and finishes in eye-catching Firebird Red, paired with the signature “G” cutout tailpiece and multiple aged binding details that give it a lived-in, vintage character right out of the case. The 22-fret mahogany neck rides a 24.6″ scale with a 1.6875″ nut width, topped with a rosewood fretboard and Neo Classic thumbnail inlays for smooth, confident playability.
Tone comes courtesy of a TV Jones Power’Tron Plus pickup in both bridge and neck positions, wired through a 3-position toggle and a control layout with independent volumes for each pickup plus master volume and tone. Chrome hardware throughout includes a pinned rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge, Grover Sta-Tite die-cast tuners, and a synthetic bone nut.
