The Fullerton Deluxe ASAT Special pulls together some of the most requested finish-and-hardware pairings from G&L’s Option Order menu into one ready-to-ship lineup. Each guitar wears a pickguard chosen to complement its color, with a Clear Tint Satin finish running up the neck to tie the whole look together. Bodies are rear-contoured alder or swamp ash depending on the finish selected.

Many players consider the ASAT Special to be Leo Fender’s definitive take on the single-cutaway solidbody. It started life in 1985 as the G&L Broadcaster — a name that ran straight into a trademark dispute with Gretsch, just as Fender’s original Broadcaster had decades earlier. The fix was a new name: ASAT, military shorthand for anti-satellite.
What makes the ASAT Special stand out is its pair of jumbo Magnetic Field Design single-coil pickups. Their narrow, wide bobbin apertures give them a voice in the neighborhood of a P-90 or Jazzmaster pickup, but the MFD design adds a firmer low end and a brighter, more harmonically rich top. Pair that with Leo’s Saddle-Lock bridge, which drives string vibration directly into the body’s end grain for exceptional resonance, and you get a guitar equally comfortable with twang, blues grit, or jazz warmth.
Built in the historic G&L factory on Fender Avenue in Fullerton, California — the birthplace of the bolt-on neck — since the company’s founding by Leo Fender in 1980.
