Description
The G&L Espada HH pulls a body shape Leo Fender sketched back in 1969 out of the CLF Research archives and dresses it in a pair of G&L alnico humbuckers. The neck pickup stays warm and clear while the bridge pickup pushes a bit hotter, mirroring the voicing found across other double-humbucker G&L models. Controls live on a wide Espada plate: volume, treble, and bass, each topped with a chrome CLF Research knob, alongside two mini-toggles handling coil-splitting for both pickups and a quick output kill-switch. Anchoring the whole thing is Leo Fender’s 1979 G&L Saddle Lock hardtail bridge, prized for sustain that doesn’t sacrifice comfort or looks.
Step up to the Espada HH Active and you get a G&L Micro-Preamp built right in. That kill-switch on the standard model becomes a 3-way toggle instead, letting you flip between passive, active, and active-bright preamp modes. Run it passive and the guitar plays exactly as designed; switch on the active circuit and the pickups’ harmonic detail comes through with noticeably more clarity. This is Leo Fender’s own fix for cable loading loss, an onboard buffer that keeps the signal honest regardless of cord length. The payoff shows up everywhere: split-coil tones with real single-coil sparkle, and humbucker tones that stay tight and defined even under heavy gain.
