Shelved for decades at CLF Research, this Leo Fender‡ blueprint from 1969 finally sees daylight as the G&L Espada HH — a double-humbucker guitar built around a body shape unlike anything else in the G&L lineup.
The pickup pairing is classic G&L: alnico humbuckers with a smooth, clear neck voice and a hotter bridge unit, the same combination found across other G&L HH models. Controls live on a wide Espada control plate — volume, treble, and bass, each topped with a chrome CLF Research knob — joined by two mini-toggles handling coil-split duties for both pickups and a handy output kill-switch for choppy rhythm tricks. Anchoring it all is the ’79-era G&L Saddle Lock hardtail bridge, prized for sustain and comfortable palm-muting feel.
Under the hood, the neck is finished in a Vintage Tint Gloss, and the body arrives in one of four factory finishes:
- Jet Black — Alder body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Black pickguard
- Vintage White — Alder body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Black pickguard
- Honeyburst — Ash body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Parchment pickguard
- Cherryburst — Ash body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Parchment pickguard
