Decades before it ever reached production, this body shape sat quietly in the CLF Research archives — one of Leo Fender’s unrealized ideas from 1969. G&L has now brought it to life as the Espada HH, outfitted with a pair of alnico humbuckers voiced in the same familiar pattern found across other G&L double-hum instruments: a smooth, articulate neck pickup paired with a hotter, more aggressive bridge unit.
The wide Espada control plate keeps things straightforward with volume, treble, and bass knobs, each topped in polished chrome. Two mini-toggles round out the electronics — one splits the coils on both pickups for thinner, single-coil-flavored tones, while the other acts as a kill switch for percussive on/off effects mid-performance.
Anchoring the whole instrument is G&L’s Saddle Lock hardtail bridge, a design pulled from 1979 that Leo Fender engineered for maximum sustain without sacrificing playing comfort. It’s a hallmark of vintage G&L craftsmanship built right into a guitar that never existed until now.
The Espada HH ships in four finish combinations:
- Jet Black — Alder body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Black pickguard, Vintage Tint Gloss neck
- Vintage White — Alder body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Black pickguard, Vintage Tint Gloss neck
- Honeyburst — Ash body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Parchment pickguard, Vintage Tint Gloss neck
- Cherryburst — Ash body, Caribbean Rosewood fretboard, 3-ply Parchment pickguard, Vintage Tint Gloss neck
