The Doheny V12 picks up where Leo Fender’s original design left off, channeling his late-1970s/early-’80s obsession with MFD humbucker development into a guitar that genuinely delivers on his “end-to-end” vision. Brothers Dave and Johnny McLaren spent years refining these pickups so they’d sound convincing in series-humbucking, parallel, and single-coil modes alike – never thin, never one-dimensional, always musical.
What sets this guitar apart is the level of coil control handed to the player. Each MFD humbucker gets its own 3-way mini toggle, finished in the classic CLF color code – white for the neck, red for the bridge – so you can dial in humbucker punch, parallel snap, or single-coil sparkle independently for either pickup. It’s the kind of granular control Leo believed players deserved, and it turns one guitar into several distinct tonal personalities.
The period-correct details carry the story further: a one-piece aluminum control plate/pickguard finished in original CLF black crinkle powdercoat, chrome-plated CLF knobs for volume, treble, and bass, and a Dual Fulcrum Vibrato fitted with a 3/16″ machined stainless steel arm alongside modern forged brass saddles and block for smooth, stable performance.
This Purple Burst example pairs a Swamp Ash body with a maple fingerboard under a thin urethane finish, set against the black crinkle pickguard for a striking, vintage-inspired look.
