Description
The Doheny V12 takes the offset body Leo Fender helped popularize and pushes it into territory he was exploring in his final years at CLF Research: humbuckers built to do it all. Brothers Dave and Johnny McLaren designed the MFD humbuckers here to sound convincing in series, parallel, and single-coil modes, so the same guitar can move from thick, saturated lead tones to glassy, articulate cleans without losing character.
What sets the V12 apart is control. Each pickup gets its own 3-way mini toggle, finished with the classic CLF color coding (white for neck, red for bridge), letting you dial in series-humbucking, parallel, or single-coil voicing independently for either pickup. That’s a lot of tonal ground covered from one guitar.
This Jet Black example is finished over an Alder body with a black crinkle pickguard and a Caribbean rosewood fingerboard, echoing the vintage CLF aesthetic right down to the black crinkle powdercoated aluminum control plate and chrome CLF knobs. The Dual Fulcrum vibrato uses a period-correct 3/16″ stainless steel arm alongside modern forged brass saddles and block for smooth, stable pitch changes.
Built on a bolt-on Hard-Rock Maple neck with G&L’s Modern Classic profile, a 9 1/2″ radius, and 21 medium jumbo nickel frets, the Doheny V12 plays fast while staying comfortable. A bone nut and sealed-back 12:1 tuners keep tuning stable, and the PTB control layout (volume, treble, bass) offers active-style shaping from a passive circuit.
