The Wolfgang isn’t a guitar Eddie Van Halen designed once and walked away from—it’s the product of two years of prototyping and a full year of nightly abuse on Van Halen’s 2007-2008 world tour. Every bend, dive-bomb, and marathon set fed data back into the design until Eddie was satisfied it could take anything a stage or studio could throw at it. What you’re holding is exactly what he plugged into himself, built to the same spec since it hit the market in January 2009.
This particular USA model pairs a basswood body under an arched 5A flame maple top with a striking 3-Tone Sunburst gloss urethane finish, wrapped in 5-ply binding that carries over to the matching bound headstock. The quartersawn maple neck wears an ebony fretboard with block inlays and a compound 12″-16″ radius, giving you a flatter feel up top for bending without sacrificing comfort near the nut. Stainless steel frets—22 of them—keep things smooth and long-lasting, backed by dual graphite reinforcement rods for stability.
Under the hood, double-potted custom-wound EVH humbuckers sit in a hard-mounted configuration for maximum sustain and low-end punch, wired through EVH’s reverse-style 3-way switching (neck / both / bridge) with simple master volume and tone controls. An EVH-branded Floyd Rose locking tremolo with the built-in D-Tuna lets you drop the low E on the fly, backed by a Floyd Rose Original locking nut and low-friction pots for tuning stability night after night.
