The SP90-1 Vintage Soapbar is Seymour Duncan’s faithful reproduction of the single-coil Gibson introduced in 1946, built to reclaim that era’s thick, vocal-like midrange. Short, wide bobbins pack in more output and a stronger low-mid punch than you’d get from a Strat or Tele-style single-coil, giving the pickup its signature growl.
To keep things period-correct, Seymour Duncan winds this pickup with plain enamel wire on the same Leesona machine originally used for P-90s in the 1950s. The result is a smooth, sweet-toned pickup that cleans up nicely but still snarls when pushed — a great fit for country, jazz, swing, blues, rockabilly, classic rock, and heavier rock tones alike.
It’s especially at home in mahogany-bodied guitars with rosewood boards, where its warmth and balance really shine. One detail worth noting: this Vintage version sits at a slightly taller .745″ profile than the SP90-2 Hot or SP90-3 Custom, so mounting height should be checked against your existing hardware.
