Description
The SH-14 Custom 5 grew out of requests from Seymour Duncan’s own user community, who swapped the ceramic magnet in an SH-5 Custom (or the Alnico 2 in an SH-11 Custom Custom) for an Alnico 5. The result is a bridge humbucker that trades some of the aggressive edge of those models for a warmer, more vintage-flavored voice, without sacrificing the strength and cut that made the Custom series a bridge-position favorite.
Plugged in clean, the Custom 5 opens up with a rich, full-bodied tone and extra presence on top, so chords stay articulate and single notes ring with clarity. Push it into overdrive and you still get plenty of output and sustain, just with a rounder, less compressed feel than the standard Custom. Think of it as a beefed-up ’59-style pickup: deeper low end, more headroom, and enough power to handle pop, country, blues, classic rock, and heavy rock without losing definition.
- Alnico 5 magnet for a more vintage-voiced, higher-output humbucker sound
- Deeper bottom end and expanded output compared to a standard ’59 Model
- Rich, full clean tones with enhanced presence
- Strong, powerful drive tones with reduced harshness versus the SH-5/SH-11
- Four-conductor hookup cable included for coil-split wiring options
- Recommended for the bridge position
For classic P.A.F.-style tone across the whole guitar, many players pair this Custom 5 in the bridge with a ’59 Model in the neck.
