Long before novelty shapes were a marketing gimmick, Bo Diddley was swinging a rectangular guitar across stages and turning heads for it. The G6138 revives that original 1958 build Gretsch crafted just for him, right down to the semi-hollow construction and unmistakable silhouette. It’s part of the Professional Collection, and it wears its Firebird Red gloss urethane finish like a statement piece.
Under the hood, an alder back paired with a laminated maple top gives the body its resonant character, while the three-piece rock maple neck and ebony fingerboard keep things stable and fast across all 22 frets. A 12″ radius and 1.6875″ nut width strike a comfortable balance for chord work and lead lines alike, and the pearloid dot inlays add a subtle vintage touch against the dark board.
Tone comes from a pair of High Sensitive Filter’Tron pickups, wired through a 3-position toggle with independent volume controls for each pickup plus master volume and tone – the classic Gretsch control layout that lets you dial in everything from twangy bite to warm jazz roundness. The rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge and signature G-cutout tailpiece anchor the strings, while Grover Rotomatic tuners keep tuning stable night after night.
Details that seal the deal: gold-plated hardware, a body-bound edge, an inlaid Gretsch headstock logo, and a truss rod cover stamped with Bo Diddley’s own signature. It ships in a deluxe hardshell case.
