Chris Fleming of the Fender Custom Shop took his acclaimed Baja Telecaster and dialed it back to the 1960s, wrapping it in an alder body finished in Faded Sonic Blue and topping it with a Pau Ferro fingerboard. The neck carries a slightly beefier ’60s “C” profile than a typical Tele, giving your fretting hand plenty of wood to grab onto without feeling clubby.
Under the hood, American Vintage ’52 (neck) and ’58 (bridge) single-coil pickups deliver the twang and bite that made this design famous, but the electronics don’t stop at the usual three-way switching. A special four-position blade switch adds a fourth voice — neck and bridge in series — for a fatter, hotter tone than the standard parallel combination. Push the volume knob and the built-in S-1 switch flips both pickups from in-phase to out-of-phase, opening up thinner, hollowed-out textures you won’t get from a stock Telecaster.
Other period-correct touches include an American Vintage strings-through-body bridge with three brass saddles, a mint green 3-ply pickguard, vintage-style tuners, and the engraved “Custom Shop Designed” neckplate that confirms its pedigree.
