The G&L Legacy Tribute takes the S-500 and Comanche playbook and runs it through vintage-spec Alnico V single-coils, landing squarely on that chimey, quacky tone players chase from the golden era. G&L’s Paul Gagon didn’t just copy old blueprints to get there u2013 he spent time on the factory floor with builders who’d been winding pickups since the ’50s, comparing what they actually did against what the paperwork said. The CLF-100 pickups that resulted earned praise from Guitar Player and Guitar World, and they still hold up.
What separates this from a straight vintage reissue is Leo Fender’s own PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) circuit, active across all three pickups for tonal range well beyond a standard single-coil setup. The Dual-Fulcrum vibrato u2013 another Leo design u2013 gives you stable pitch bends in either direction with a smooth-moving aluminum arm, so you’re not fighting the bridge to stay in tune after a dive.
