Few players obsess over tone like Eric Johnson, and this Artist Series Stratocaster is the direct result of that obsession. Rather than a simple signature model with a name on the headstock, Fender worked closely with Johnson to recreate the specific details he’d hunted for in vintage instruments over decades of touring and recording.
The two-piece alder body follows a 1957-style deep contour and wears a thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish in White Blonde, letting the wood breathe and age naturally. The one-piece quartersawn maple neck carries a soft V profile with a 12″ radius maple fingerboard and 21 highly polished medium jumbo frets – a combination that favors fast lead lines as much as chunky rhythm work. Vintage-style Fender/Gotoh staggered tuners do away with string trees entirely, keeping the headstock clean and the string path smooth.
Three specially wound Eric Johnson pickups sit under a parchment 8-hole pickguard, wired to a five-position blade switch, master volume, and two tone controls (neck and bridge). Countersunk mounting screws and vintage-correct pickup construction reflect the same attention to detail found throughout the guitar. The American Vintage synchronized tremolo uses a silver-painted block with the 57-style string recess – no paint between the base plate and block – strung with five springs and no rear cover plate, just as Johnson specified.
