Eric Johnson has spent decades chasing a specific kind of tone—liquid, singing, and endlessly articulate. Rather than settle for an existing design, he spent two years working directly with Fender to build one from scratch. The result is this Thinline Stratocaster: a semi-hollow instrument that pulls from his favorite hollowbody guitars while staying rooted in traditional Strat feel and contours.
The two-piece alder body is custom-chambered and finished in nitrocellulose lacquer, letting the wood resonate naturally rather than getting sealed under a thick poly coat. Three single-coil pickups, voiced specifically to Johnson’s spec, mount with countersunk screws directly to the semi-hollow body for better vibration transfer straight into the pickups themselves.
The neck is quartersawn maple in a ’57 Soft V profile, paired with a 12″ radius maple fingerboard and 21 medium-jumbo frets—a combination built for fast, comfortable playing across the neck. Vintage-correct touches carry through the whole build: a ’57-style tremolo with a silver-painted block, staggered vintage tuning machines on a thin headstock, a parchment pickguard, and an ashtray bridge cover.
This is the first semi-hollow Stratocaster to combine internal chambering with the Strat’s familiar arm and body contours, making it as comfortable to hold as it is distinctive to hear.
