Description
When guitarists started chasing fatter, more aggressive tones in the early ’70s, Fender turned to Seth Lover — the engineer behind the original humbucker — to craft something uniquely Fender. What he came up with was the Wide Range pickup: an oversized dual-coil design built with threaded CuNiFe rod magnets instead of the usual alnico or ceramic bars. That unusual magnet choice gave the pickup its distinct brightness paired with humbucking warmth, a combination that couldn’t quite be replicated once the original Telecaster Custom was dropped from the line in 1979 and true CuNiFe pickups vanished with it.
The American Original 70s Telecaster Custom brings that formula back, pairing a Telecaster’s snap and twang with the added girth of the Wide Range humbucker in the neck position. Finished in 3-Color Sunburst over a rosewood fingerboard, this is a guitar built for players who want the classic Tele feel but need more headroom for pushing into overdriven amps.
