Two years of study went into the Silver Sky before it ever left the drawing board. John Mayer wanted the character of his favorite ’63 and ’64 single-coils without the quirks that come with age, and working alongside Paul Reed Smith, he got exactly that. This is a guitar built to feel familiar the moment you pick it up, yet play tighter and more consistently than any vintage original.
Look closely and the differences from a typical vintage-style build add up fast. The headstock is PRS’s classic shape flipped in orientation, both for Mayer’s technique and to keep string length behind the nut even, so tuning stability improves across the board. Locking tuners with a vintage closed-back look handle the actual tuning. The steel tremolo bridge sits flush to the body at rest, which means it only dips in pitch and never sharps unexpectedly – and that tight body contact also makes the guitar noticeably louder acoustically, feeding more signal into the 635JM single-coils. Those pickups are voiced full and round, with high end that stays musical instead of turning brittle.
This particular configuration pairs the rosewood fretboard with a neck shape (635JM-R) that’s been softened slightly in the shoulders compared to the maple version, giving your fretting hand a rounder, less angular grip. Both neck profiles were shaped through research into vintage PRS instruments plus real-world feedback from Mayer playing shows. The fretboard itself carries a 7.25″ radius with small bird inlays.
Rounding out the build: a bone nut, a curved metal jack plate designed to make cable swaps painless, reworked control knobs, and a double-acting truss rod adjustable from the headstock face. A PRS premium gig bag ships with the guitar.
