Description
Tim Armstrong of Rancid has spent decades hammering out chords with reckless conviction, and this left-handed Electromatic hollow body was built to keep up. The single-cutaway hollow body is laminated maple front, back, and sides, wrapped in 4-ply binding and finished in a matte black urethane that looks as raw as the music it’s made for. Inside, parallel tone bar bracing with a sound post keeps the body stable and controls feedback while still letting that big hollow-body air move.
A one-piece maple neck carries a bound rosewood fingerboard dressed with block acrylic inlays and jumbo frets across 22 positions, all riding on a 24.33″ scale. A graphite nut sits up front, and the bound headstock wears a pearloid Gretsch logo alongside Armstrong’s own signature on the truss rod cover — a nice touch for the diehards.
Tone comes from a pair of Black Top Filter’Tron pickups mounted in gold-plated bezels, routed through independent volume and tone controls for each pickup plus a master volume, all switched via a straightforward 3-position toggle. Gold-plated hardware carries through to the Grover enclosed tuners and the rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge, paired with a harp tailpiece for that classic Gretsch twang and sustain.
