Long before pedal-tuner apps and boutique finishes, Eddie Van Halen grabbed a saw, some tape, and a can of Schwinn bicycle spray paint to build one of rock’s most recognizable guitars. He cut jagged, tooth-like notches into an angular offset body, sealed it in silver, masked off his signature stripe pattern, then blasted it with burgundy “˜round the edges. The result debuted on the 1978 Van Halen World Tour and became forever iconic on the back cover of 1980’s Women and Children First.
EVH’s Striped Series Shark brings that exact look to a genuinely playable modern instrument. The ash body carries a set maple neck carved in a comfortable modified “C” profile, topped with a hockey-stick headstock finished in the same matching stripes on the back. The Pau Ferro fingerboard uses a fast 12″-16″ compound radius with 22 jumbo frets and white dot inlays, so bends and shredding runs stay smooth from the first fret to the last.
Tone comes from a matched pair of EVH Wolfgang alnico 2 humbuckers – parchment bobbins with metal braid wire in the bridge, black bobbins with metal braid wire in the neck – tuned for that balanced blend of punch, sustain, and articulate low end EVH pickups are known for. A low-friction volume knob with treble bleed keeps swells even across the sweep, while the chrome-plated solid-brass harmonica bridge adds serious attack and sustain.
Details carry the theme through: black numbered speed knobs, a three-way toggle mounted on a brass plate, a brass nut, gold-and-chrome EVH-stamped Gotoh tuners, and chrome eye hooks with turnbuckles round out the package – all wrapped in that unmistakable Burgundy with Silver Stripes finish.
