By 1965, the Jazzmaster had moved past its surf-rock beginnings and was quietly becoming the guitar of choice for a new breed of unconventional players. Fender’s American Vintage series revisits that exact moment, rebuilding the instrument from original tooling and period-correct research rather than simply reissuing old blueprints. The result is a Jazzmaster that looks, feels, and sounds like it was pulled straight from a mid-’60s case.
This model carries the refinements that defined the guitar by ’65: a bound, round-laminated rosewood fingerboard with larger pearl dot inlays, and the distinctive white “witch hat” knobs that have become a visual signature of the era. The offset Jazzmaster body pairs with a Maple neck in a Mid ’60s “C” profile, 7.25″ radius fingerboard, and 21 vintage-style frets across a 25.5″ scale — familiar Fender feel with the slightly wider 1.650″ nut this design calls for.
Electronics stay true to the original dual-circuit concept: a 3-position toggle selects bridge, bridge+neck, or neck pickup, while a separate slide switch flips between the Rhythm and Lead tone circuits, each with its own Volume and Tone controls. The American Vintage ’65 pickups were wound to match the period’s tonal character, delivering that airy, slightly wiry Jazzmaster voice.
Hardware rounds out the vintage-correct build — a floating tremolo with lock button, bone nut, single-line Fender Deluxe tuning machines, and chrome hardware throughout, strung with Fender USA 250R NPS strings (.010-.046).
