The PRS Silver Sky exists because John Mayer wanted the soul of an old single-coil guitar without the quirks that come with age. Working alongside Paul Reed Smith, he pulled the best qualities from 1963 and 1964 instruments and refined them with modern engineering, landing on a guitar that feels broken-in from the first strum but plays with the precision of something brand new. This model wears a Moc Sand Satin finish and features a maple fretboard for a bright, articulate top end.
Mayer’s fingerprints are all over the details. The headstock keeps PRS’s signature silhouette but flips it to suit his technique, and a uniform string length behind the nut paired with vintage-style, closed-back locking tuners keeps tuning rock solid night after night. The maple neck carries his personal profile, with a maple fretboard set with PRS bird inlays.
Under the hood, 635JM single-coil pickups deliver a rounded, full-bodied voice with a top end that stays smooth rather than harsh. The steel tremolo uses Gen III knife-edge screws and sits in a neutral, drop-only position, while its expanded contact with the guitar body boosts acoustic resonance and, in turn, the pickups’ signal-to-noise performance.
