Description
The G9221 Bobtail Steel takes the classic resonator formula and refits it for players who need real volume with real character. Its all-steel body pairs with Gretsch’s own Ampli-Sonic “Spider” cone diaphragm — spun from 99% pure aluminum — to produce a bright, cutting tone that pushes through a mix without sounding harsh. This is a round-neck design, so it plays like a standard acoustic rather than a lap-style slide instrument.
The neck is mahogany with a medium “V” profile, topped with a rosewood fingerboard and aged pearloid dot inlays across 19 medium jumbo frets (12 join the body). A 25″ scale length and 1.75″ nut width keep the feel familiar to most acoustic players, while the 15.75″ fingerboard radius and bone nut round out a comfortable setup. Grover Sta-Tite die-cast tuners hold things in tune, and the neck wears a semi-gloss honey mahogany stain finish.
Plug-in tone comes from a Fishman Nashville resophonic pickup mounted at the spider bridge, letting you take that resonator snarl straight to a DI or amp. Cosmetic touches nod to Gretsch’s history, including a nickel-plated poinsettia cover-plate and a 1930s-style headstock shape with an aged pearloid face.
