Gretsch’s G9120 Tenor Standard proves a ukulele can carry real musical weight. Part of the Roots Collection, it’s built entirely from mahogany – top, back, sides, and neck – giving it a warm, rounded voice with plenty of midrange bark, the kind of tone that cuts through a mix rather than disappearing into it.
The open-pore semi-gloss finish keeps things looking vintage and lets the wood breathe, while a 1920s-style 2×2 headstock and aged pearloid dot inlays nod to Gretsch’s long design history. Under the hood, T-bracing supports the top for stability and projection, and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge pair with a bone nut and saddle for clean sustain and articulate note separation.
At 17″ scale length with 19 frets (14 clear of the body), there’s room to explore beyond basic chord-strumming – lead lines and higher voicings stay accessible. Grover 9NB Sta-Tite geared tuning machines hold pitch reliably, a welcome upgrade over friction pegs found on cheaper ukes, and Aquila Nylgut strings deliver a natural, gut-string feel and tone right out of the box.
