The Glissentar is Godin’s answer to a question guitarists rarely ask themselves: what if you could slide, bend, and glide between notes the way an oud player does, without abandoning the guitar shapes and habits you already know? It’s an 11-string, fretless acoustic-electric strung with nylon strings and tuned to standard guitar tuning, so the tuning and left-hand logic stay familiar even as the fretless neck opens up a world of microtonal ornamentation, quarter-tones, and vocal-like slides that fretted instruments simply can’t produce.
Structurally, it borrows heavily from the West — standard scale length, body size and depth, fingerboard radius, and string height are all in line with typical acoustic-electric guitars, which makes the transition far less intimidating than an 11-string fretless instrument might suggest. Side position markers along the neck give you visual reference points despite the absence of frets, so your muscle memory as a guitarist carries over more than you’d expect. The Eastern half of its DNA traces back to the oud, a seventh-century ancestor of the mandolin still central to Armenian and Egyptian music, and also built as an 11-string fretless instrument.
Tonally, the two-chamber Silver Leaf Maple body paired with a solid Cedar top gives the Glissentar warmth and resonance, amplified onstage or in the studio through Godin’s custom under-saddle transducer and preamp with dedicated Volume, Mid, Treble, and Bass controls.
