Gretsch’s R&D crew dug up a vintage Baldwin-era FilterTron with serious bite and twang, then built its DNA into the new Black Top Filter’Tron pickups found in the G5420T. The result is a hollow body that carries the classic Gretsch character but speaks with a fresher, more electric voice.
The body itself is 5-ply maple in a bound single-cutaway shape, reinforced with sound-post bracing and finished with elegant bound f-holes. At 2.75″ deep, it’s built to resonate while staying manageable on stage or in the studio. A silver plexi pickguard and chrome-plated hardware give it that cool, retro sparkle Aspen Green is known for.
Down the maple neck you’ll find a bound rosewood fingerboard loaded with 22 medium jumbo frets and hump-block pearloid inlays — smooth under the fingers and sharp to look at. The 24.5″ scale and 1.6875″ nut width strike a comfortable balance for players moving between electric and acoustic-style instruments.
Electronics are straightforward and musician-friendly: bridge and neck Black Top Filter’Tron pickups routed through a 3-position toggle (bridge, both, neck), with independent volume controls for each pickup plus master volume and master tone. A rosewood-based Adjusto-Matic bridge pairs with a Bigsby-licensed B60 vibrato tailpiece for pitch-bending vibrato work, while vintage-style open-back tuners keep things tuned and looking period-correct.
