Description
The G9455 “Dixie Special” sits right in the middle of Gretsch’s Dixie banjo lineup, and it doesn’t act like a budget instrument. Gretsch built in a rolled brass tone ring and 24 tension brackets over an 11″ Remo Renaissance head, giving the drum a lively, articulate voice that suits clawhammer and frailing styles especially well — helped along by the frailing scoop cut into the rosewood fingerboard at the 18th fret.
The neck is rock maple with a vintage soft “U” profile, finished in the same amber maple matte tone as the resonator-free pot, and dressed with old-school B&D position markers. At a 26.4″ scale with a 1.875″ nut, it feels familiar in the hand for anyone coming from old-time or bluegrass instruments. Hardware stays true to the vintage vibe too: a no-knot-style tailpiece, dual coordinator rods, geared die-cast tuners (including a geared 5th string tuner), and a Vega-style armrest, all finished in nickel plate. An ebony-tipped maple bridge rounds out the setup, and it ships strung with D’Addario J61 nickel strings (.010-.023).
